"For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way. Something to be got through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life." - Fr. Alfred D'Souza
"Holy crap. Where are we?" I looked over at Ryan as we walked through a sea of people at Bonnaroo in Manchester, TN last week. For those of you who've never heard of Bonnaroo, it's an arts and music festival that takes place once a year in Tennessee. Think Lollapalooza. But BIGGER. And you camp out in tents all week. In the hot sun. It's intense. And not for the weary.
Being at Bonnaroo, offered a plethora of activities. Yoga and Kirtan every morning as the sun was rising. Non-profit organizations promoting their causes. Musical acts of all different genres performing well into the night. There was so many new things to experience, you couldn't possibly take it all in in a single day.
Every morning you wake up, you have a choice to experience something new or continue with the mundane. Personally, I believe life's too short for the mundane. There are so many things in this world that can be experienced if you put yourself out there. All too often, I meet people who are stuck in a never-ending cycle of wake up - work - eat - sleep. At times we all get caught in this cycle. Even me.
I felt somewhat guilty for leaving Aligned Modern Health for 5 days. Will my patients be ok? Will marketing get done? I need to finish paperwork. I need send out emails. I need to make phone calls. I'm going to miss important meetings and events. And then I realized something while I was sitting at my tent one morning at Bonnaroo... none of that mattered. And the only thing that was important at that very moment was THAT VERY MOMENT.
I chose to seize my day that day. I did everything I could possibly fit into a day. Including a nap under a tree. And laughs with my friends. That night, I sang "Amazing Grace" with 50,000 other Bonnaroo fans while the Tennessee sun was setting and Mumford & Sons closed off their set. It was an epic experience that I will never forget.
Just for today I encourage you to step out of the mundane. Let go of all the things that you think are important. Nap under a tree. Watch the sunset with someone you love. Life's too short not to.
