When You've Come to the End of the Road
"Some people think that holding on is what makes us strong. Somtimes it's letting go." - Author Unknown
I was driving home from Monday's yoga class at Aligned Modern Health and an old R&B favorite came on on my iPod. "Although we've come to the end of the road, still I can't let go..." Boyz II Men serenades me as I fly south on Lakeshore Drive. You can't help but belt out the lyrics with them. Fist clutched. Eyes closed (but only for a second since I was driving). I couldn't help but start to feel the pain and longing that comes with letting go of something.
Sometimes admitting that something is over can feel like defeat. We're constantly bombarded with messages that tell us to "never give up," "hold on," "keep fighting." But if you're honest with yourself, you'll know when it's time to move on.
If you're honest with yourself, you'll know when a relationship no longer serves you, and you realize you're just in it because you're scared to leave.
If you're honest with yourself you’ll know when a job no longer makes you happy, but you're staying because you think it'll be hard to find something else.
If you're honest with yourself, you'll know when a business idea didn't work, and it's time to cut your losses and start something new.
Somewhere inside you, you always know. Stop ignoring the feelings of discontent, and decide it's time to let go. Let go of the relationship, the friendship, the job, the hobby, the idea, the religion, and in some cases, the illusion of something that you never even had to begin with.
Just for today if you're unsure whether you should hold on or let go, sit in stillness with your eyes closed and ask yourself: If you were fully honest about your needs and desires, while not letting fear choose for you, which choice would you make?
Now that you've come to the end of the road, all you need is the strength to take a different route.
